About Lighting Design

Light has the ability to define, conceal, accentuate and dramatise. We have an innate response to light and the amount, colour and source of light can affect our emotions and mood. Light is essential on the practical level for sight and tasks; the right amount and appropriate position of the light is vital for detailed work and home tasks such as reading, cooking and entertaining. Light also has a role within our health and wellbeing; too little light can bring on depression and a winter-related illness called SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Too much light or contrast can cause headaches, tension and eye pain. Read more...

Why Light?

Good even lighting is needed in bathrooms for shaving and make up regimes. Colour rendering is very important as is fitting placement so as to avoid shadowing. Layers are also advisable to allow for total flexibility from morning madness to your evening soak, providing an appropriate lighting scheme for every situation.

Lighting is also essential for safety in the bathroom, where uneven levels, steps and sitting water can all cause hazards. Midnight trips to the bathroom can become safer with gentle low level lighting. Read more...

When to consider lighting

Lighting can be added to any room, home or garden at any stage. However, to achieve a balanced and complimentary scheme, the illumination of a project should be considered inline with room layout, design of the interior and the building work itself. This allows a flowing scheme to be created, blending seamlessly in with the rest of the home décor and design. The best point at which to contact your lighting designer is even before the project has begun, as this will allow full integration of the theme of your home within the lighting scheme. Having architectural plans will help with the progression of the project however a good lighting designer will be able to draw your plans for you. It is also advisable to know what furniture will be going in the room to get an idea of size, style, colour and positioning. This allows your downlights to be centred over your grand piano perfectly. Once contacted, your designer will be able to create the desired scheme for you, whether it be for one room of your home, or for the entire interior and exterior. Read more..

How much does a lighting designer cost?

Lighting designer fees depend greatly on the experience of the designer, the level of service offered and the size of the project. Hourly fees are more common than set costs for a space as designs may change, interiors can alter and amendments need to be accounted for. You can expect an hourly fee of between £70-140 for a good quality lighting designer and this should include a full design service, product specification and an after-service commissioning visit to ensure the lighting scheme is as planned. Where to light

Certain areas of a bathroom must be lit. Mirrors need shadow-free lighting and illumination over a bath or shower is also a must. Low level lighting is great for safety and adding layers of light and therefore depth, to your bathroom. The exact positioning, height, angle and strength of light to be used can be calculated by your lighting designer, who will ensure that an appropriate amount of light is installed within the bathroom. Lighting designers will also take into account surface finishes and colours as these will have an effect on the end result of the lighting scheme. Deep matt coloured walls and finishes will tend to absorb light therefore requiring higher light levels within the space, whereas white and reflective surfaces increase the light levels. Light fittings

A variety of bathroom lights are available from many home renovation stores. Quality differs greatly from extremely cheap fittings costing £5 each to high quality lights at £100 each. Choosing your fittings is very important and as a rule the more you spend on quality fittings, the less hassle you will have with maintenance and replacing fittings. Cheaper fittings tend to last only a year or two before the seals break down and need replacing.
